Tragic Fatal Crash Claims Life of Young Man from Elnora, Indiana

DAVIESS COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — In a devastating incident over the weekend, a young man from Elnora lost his life and his brother sustained injuries in a fatal crash. The incident occurred in Daviess County, Indiana, along C.R. 700 N. just east of CR. 200 E., in a southern area of Plainville.

The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office reported that the single-vehicle crash took place at approximately 1:42 a.m. on Sunday. According to investigating deputies, the driver failed to negotiate a sharp S curve on the roadway, causing the vehicle to veer off into a ditch.

Sheriff Gary Allison stated that neither the driver nor the passenger were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. Tragically, the passenger, identified as 19-year-old Breyden Pershing, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Breyden’s 21-year-old brother, was initially taken to Daviess Community Hospital for treatment of his injuries and later transferred to an Evansville hospital.

Importance of Seatbelt Usage and Road Safety

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of wearing seatbelts at all times while driving or riding in a vehicle. Seatbelts are designed to safeguard individuals from serious injuries or even death during a collision by preventing them from being ejected from the vehicle or forcefully thrown around inside it.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), wearing a seatbelt can reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passenger car occupants by 45% and the risk of moderate to critical injury by 50%. In addition, the NHTSA estimates that seatbelts saved approximately 14,955 lives in the United States in 2017 alone.

To ensure your safety and the safety of others, it is crucial to always buckle up before starting any journey, regardless of the distance. Additionally, drivers should adhere to speed limits, avoid distractions, and drive defensively to minimize the risk of accidents.
