The incident occurred at approximately 2:15 a.m. on Sunday when Wheeling Fire Department and Wheeling Police Department responded to a vehicle crash with injuries at the intersection of Palatine Road and Wheeling Road in Wheeling. The crash took place in the westbound lanes of Palatine Road, just east of Wheeling Road.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a suspected intoxicated driver was traveling eastbound in the wrong direction and collided head-on with Gillen’s vehicle. Gillen, the 53-year-old driver, tragically lost his life at the scene. Another occupant of the vehicle sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The Northwest Suburban Major Case Assistance Team’s Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction unit was called in to investigate the incident. While no charges have been announced against the driver responsible for the crash as of yet, authorities are actively working on the case.

Dr. David Wilm, the Superintendent of Wauconda Community Unit School District 118, expressed the deep sorrow felt by the district and community over Gillen’s unexpected passing. Gillen had been an integral part of the Wauconda High School community since 1996, dedicating his time to the education of students, the care of athletes, and the growth of his colleagues.

Mark Ribbens, the Athletic Director at Wauconda High School, spoke highly of Gillen’s dedication to his students and the school community. Ribbens emphasized Gillen’s selflessness and how he always prioritized the well-being of others.

In a touching tribute, students left notes and flowers in the athletic training room of the school, honoring Gillen’s memory and the impact he had on their lives.
