Colorado Man Pleads Guilty to Aiming Laser Pointer at Police Helicopter

A 43-year-old man from Colorado has pleaded guilty to a single count of aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft. The incident occurred on March 2, 2023, when a helicopter operated by the Denver Police Department, known as “Air 1,” was providing aerial surveillance support to other law enforcement agencies in the state.

During the flight, Air 1 was struck by a blue laser, posing a potential danger to the crew and the aircraft. Using thermal imaging and camera equipment, the Air 1 crew was able to trace the origin of the laser strike to a parking lot near the intersection of East 55th Avenue and Logan Court in Denver.

The suspect responsible for the laser strike, identified as 43-year-old Kevin William Adamchak from Franktown, was located and apprehended by Air 1. In an interview following the incident, the pilot of Air 1 reported experiencing flash blindness and intense pain in both eyes due to the laser strike. Fortunately, he was able to regain visual orientation and maintain control of the aircraft.

United States Attorney Cole Finegan emphasized the seriousness of laser strikes on aircraft, stating, “What some may think is just a prank—pointing a laser pointer at an aircraft—actually presents a deadly risk to people in the aircraft and on the ground. We hope that this case will raise public awareness of these serious dangers.”

FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Mark Michalek echoed this sentiment, saying, “A laser strike on an aircraft is not a game. It’s a serious action with potentially lethal consequences. The FBI will continue to vigorously investigate these incidents.”

Kevin William Adamchak is scheduled to be sentenced on March 7, 2024. The sentencing will be determined by a United States District Judge, taking into consideration the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant factors.
