Chicago Southwest Side Shooting: 16-Year-Old Charged with Murder of Two Relatives

CHICAGO (WLS) — A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon on Chicago’s Southwest Side, resulting in the shooting deaths of a 14-year-old boy and a 65-year-old man. Chicago Police Department (CPD) has announced that a 16-year-old boy has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the incident.

The suspect, whose identity has been withheld due to their status as a minor, was apprehended on Friday in the 6700-block of South Artesian Avenue. CPD identified him as the individual responsible for fatally shooting both the man and the boy.

According to the authorities, the victims were standing in the 3500-block of West 61st Place in Chicago Lawn neighborhood around 4:20 p.m. when they were attacked. The assailants arrived at the scene in a gray vehicle and opened fire, causing fatal injuries to both victims.

The 65-year-old man was immediately rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the medical center. The 14-year-old boy, on the other hand, was pronounced dead at the scene itself.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the victims as Juan A. Medina Jr., aged 14, and Mario Medina, aged 65. Both victims resided in the same block where the shooting occurred, as confirmed by the medical examiner’s office.

After the incident, the suspects fled the scene by driving west on 61st Place, according to CPD.

Andrew Holmes, a crisis responder and victim advocate, revealed that the victims were related. He stated, “There was some type of altercation here. Some individual came to visit another individual, a gray car pulled up; they discharged that weapon, striking the 14-year-old. We don’t know if he knew the individuals or what the relationship between the people that were coming to visit him was, just don’t know.”
