Alex Batty‘s grandfather may still be alive, according to neighbors in a remote French hamlet where the family has been staying since 2017.

Alex was reportedly taken by his mother, Melanie Batty, who did not have legal custody, and his grandfather David Batty, when they went on a vacation to Spain.

Alex, his mother, and grandfather were believed to have been living a nomadic lifestyle in spiritual communities over the past few years.

However, neighbors in La Bastide claim to have seen David alive and well just over a week ago.

One of the neighbors, Sebastian, revealed, “Peter is not dead. I saw him a week ago, maybe ten days ago. He was mowing the grass in front of the Gite. Peter was a nice person. He was very shy.”

Sebastian added that Alex seemed happy and healthy while growing up in the remote village, and there was no indication that he was being held against his will.

French prosecutors previously stated that Alex’s mother may be in Finland, while his grandfather David had passed away six months ago.

The whereabouts of Alex’s mother and grandfather are still uncertain.

Upon his return, Alex was described as “tired” but “in good health” by French officials.

A Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman stated, “There likely won’t be any further updates until Alex has been properly spoken to by GMP.”

GMP Assistant Chief Constable Matt Boyle expressed his pleasure at Alex’s safe return and emphasized the need for privacy as they move forward.
