DHENKANAL: In a tragic incident, two labourers lost their lives while another fell critically ill due to asphyxiation caused by fumes from a generator inside a closed room at a brick kiln in Dhenkanal. The unfortunate event took place on Thursday night near Maneswar village, situated on the banks of the Brahmani river.

The deceased individuals have been identified as Dirisa Kankel, 18, and Rayesh Banara, 19. The injured labourer, Khande Banara, 20, was found in a critical condition and has been immediately admitted to the hospital for treatment. All three workers hailed from the Kishore Nagar area of Pallahara town in Angul district.

Unfortunate Sequence of Events

According to Kantabania IIC Deepika Ray, the incident occurred when the three labourers went to sleep in a closed room at the brick kiln after starting the generator set on Thursday night. It is suspected that the victims might have succumbed to the smoke emitted by the generator, which had been running inside the room throughout the night. The following morning, fellow workers became concerned when the trio did not respond to their knocks on the door. Sensing something amiss, they immediately informed the brick kiln owner.

Upon receiving the distress call, the local police from Kantabania rushed to the spot and forcefully entered the room. Inside, they discovered the three workers lying unconscious. Without wasting time, the authorities rushed them to the Angul district headquarters hospital. Tragically, doctors declared two of them dead upon arrival, while Khande’s deteriorating condition necessitated his transfer to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. The trio had been employed at the brick kiln for approximately three months.
