According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, the incident unfolded around 9:13 a.m. when a patrol sergeant from the Parkland/Spanaway precinct noticed a driver speeding north on Pacific Avenue. The sergeant promptly activated his lights and siren in an attempt to stop the vehicle. However, despite the sergeant’s efforts, the driver continued to speed away recklessly, prompting the sergeant to turn off his lights and siren and abandon the pursuit for safety reasons.

Continuing his patrol along Pacific Avenue, the sergeant stumbled upon the same car that had crashed into a pickup truck. As the sergeant approached the scene, he noticed five teenagers fleeing from the vehicle on foot.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department promptly dispatched additional deputies to the area. One of the deputies spotted the teenagers attempting to hide behind some bushes and ordered them to come out.

Two of the teenagers attempted to evade capture by fleeing, but the deputies, with the assistance of K9 Bronco, managed to apprehend them. One of the teens was identified as the alleged driver due to his distinctive choice of headwear—a bright blue ski mask worn as a beanie. To the deputies’ surprise, this particular teen was found in possession of a bullet, as per the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

It is worth noting that the teen was wearing an ankle monitor at the time of his arrest, according to the deputies.

Fortunately, the woman who was driving the truck that was struck in the collision, along with her 1-year-old child in the backseat, escaped the incident unharmed.

Meanwhile, the remaining four teenagers were released into the custody of their parents. Among them were a 15-year-old boy, a 14-year-old boy, a 17-year-old girl, and a 16-year-old girl.

Addressing the concerning trend of juvenile crime and the accessibility of firearms to young individuals, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department emphasized the need for the community to instill positive aspirations in its youth. The department stressed that prevention should not solely rely on law enforcement’s response to crimes but also on the collective efforts of the community.

In light of this incident, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department provided a list of resources available to support youth in need.
