Man arrested for killing landlady and concealing her body in under-storage of bed

New Delhi: A 31-year-old man has been apprehended by the police on Saturday for the murder of his landlady, a 60-year-old woman, and hiding her body in the under-storage of the bed. The suspect, identified as Devender, also known as Dev, hails from Aligarh district in Uttar Pradesh.

The victim, Asha Devi, a resident of Dilshad Garden area, was reported missing on December 10 by her son, Mahavir Singh, when she did not return after collecting rent from her tenants. It was later discovered that she had gone to collect rent at Devender’s residence.

Suspicion grew when family members noticed a foul smell emanating from the ground floor of their house in Harsh Vihar on Friday. Upon investigation, they discovered Asha Devi’s body wrapped in plastic inside the bed-box of the ground floor bedroom.

Forensic and Crime Teams were immediately called to the scene, and the decomposed body was subsequently shifted to GTB Mortuary for post-mortem examination. A case of kidnapping and murder was registered, with investigators focusing their attention on Devender, one of the deceased’s tenants who had been missing since December 10.

“The police tracked down Devender to Aligarh and apprehended him on Saturday. During questioning, Devender confessed to the crime, revealing a disturbing motive,” stated Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) Joy Tirkey.

Based on his statement, it was revealed that Devender and Asha had developed a close relationship over the years. However, Devender became involved with another woman residing in the same house. The couple even had a Roka ceremony on December 4 in Aligarh, with plans for a wedding in February 2024.

Disapproval from Asha Devi regarding their relationship led to a heated argument on December 10. Driven by jealousy, Devender claimed that Asha threatened to disrupt his plans. In a fit of rage, he attacked her with a brick, rendering her unconscious.

“After rendering her unconscious, he proceeded to assault her further, attempting to throttle her, ultimately leading to her demise,” revealed the DCP.

To cover up his crime, Devender purchased a 20-metre plastic sheet, wrapped Asha’s body, and concealed it inside the under-storage of the bed on the ground floor. He also stole cash (approximately Rs 13,000) and jewelry from Asha’s belongings before fleeing to Aligarh.

“Devender is scheduled to appear in court for further legal proceedings and police remand,” added the DCP.
