Officer Involved Shooting in Josephine County Leaves Suspect Dead




JOSEPHINE COUNTY, OR – The Oregon State Police (OSP) have reported an officer-involved shooting that took place on Friday, 15th December 2023, during a search for a suspect in a homicide investigation.

Law enforcement officers from the Oregon State Police (OSP), Grants Pass Police Department, and Josephine County Sheriff’s Office were involved in the incident.

The suspect, identified as Kelly Lynn Mason (48), was located in a vehicle near Grants Pass and attempted to flee from law enforcement officers, resulting in a pursuit.

The pursuit concluded at the intersection of Highway 199 and Allen Creek Road.

During the course of the incident, officers from all three agencies discharged their duty weapons. Tragically, Kelly Lynn Mason was pronounced deceased at the scene.

One law enforcement officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the confrontation.

Following standard protocols in Senate Bill 111 deadly force incidents, all officers involved have been placed on traumatic event leave.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the incident, with a team comprising investigators from multiple agencies overseen by the Josephine County District Attorney’s Office.
