A man from Florida has been apprehended by law enforcement after he brazenly stole an ambulance and initiated a high-speed pursuit that culminated at the entrance of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Stanley Williams, drove the stolen emergency vehicle directly to the workplace of the deputies who were in pursuit.
The incident occurred on a Saturday night, shortly before midnight. It unfolded when a deputy was assisting first responders who were attending to Williams, who was reportedly in an “altered mental state” at the back of an ambulance. According to a press release issued by the sheriff’s office, Williams appeared to be under the influence of drugs. Seizing an opportunity, he managed to gain control of the ambulance from inside and swiftly drove away from the scene.
As Williams made his daring escape, law enforcement officers promptly initiated a pursuit of the stolen ambulance. The chase eventually led them back to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Operations Center, as the audacious suspect drove onto the main lawn of the facility and came to a halt in front of the entrance.
“It’s not every day a pursuit ends at our front door,” remarked Sheriff Mark Hunter in response to the peculiar turn of events.
Sheriff Hunter further added, “This incident serves as a reminder that we can never predict what we might encounter from one moment to the next. I’m relieved that no one was injured, and the suspect was unable to pose a greater threat to our community.”
Fortunately, the incident only caused superficial damage to the lawn, while the sheriff’s office itself remained largely unscathed. Following his apprehension, Williams was promptly taken into custody and subsequently admitted to a local hospital for evaluation.
The 35-year-old suspect now faces charges of grand larceny and fleeing and eluding.
