Police Inspector Suspended in Belagavi Incident Involving Stripped Woman

The recent incident in Belagavi, Karnataka, where a 42-year-old woman was stripped and paraded naked in a village due to her son’s elopement, has resulted in the suspension of a police inspector from the Kakati police station.

The police inspector, identified as Vijaykumar Sinnur, has been suspended for “dereliction of duty,” according to SN Siddaramappa, the IG and CP of Belagavi City.

The shocking incident took place on December 11 in the Vantamuri village of Belagavi district. The woman was tied to an electric pole and assaulted by locals after her son eloped with a girl who was supposed to be engaged to someone else.

The incident has not only sparked outrage but has also triggered a political slugfest in the southern state. Both the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP have clashed over the incident.

NHRC Notices Issued to Karnataka Government and DGP

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report on the incident and has issued notices to the Karnataka government and the Director General of Police (DGP) of the state.

The NHRC stated that the incident reflects a “stereotyped patriarchal approach,” which clearly violates the victim’s right to life and dignity.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Responds

The incident has also caught the attention of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who criticized the Siddaramaiah-led government in Karnataka for its handling of the incident.

Sitharaman stated that there is no justice for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) in the state. She compared the incident to the repeated atrocities against Dalits witnessed in Congress-ruled Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.

“In @INCIndia there is no ‘nyay’ for the SCs and STs. The recent incident in Belagavi, Karnataka falls in the same category as those repeated atrocities against the Dalits seen till recently in Congress-ruled Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh,” she wrote in a social media post.

Ongoing Investigation

An ongoing investigation is underway to gather more details about the incident. Authorities are working to identify and apprehend those involved in the assault.
