Police Shooting at Mobile Home in Mesa Leaves Man in Critical Condition
PHOENIX — Officers from the Mesa Police Department were involved in a shooting incident at a mobile home in Mesa on Friday afternoon, leaving a 27-year-old man in critical condition.
The man, identified as David Dimas, was rushed to a local hospital where he is currently receiving medical treatment. Despite the severity of his injuries, authorities expect Dimas to survive.
The Mesa Police Department confirmed that none of the officers or bystanders were injured during the incident, according to a press release. The shooting occurred at the Garden Spot Mobile Home Park, located just east of the intersection of Main Street and Stapley Drive, following a domestic disturbance call.
Police received a call from an individual who reported that Dimas, her stepfather, was inside a storage shed, setting items on fire and threatening to harm himself with a utility knife. Concerned for his safety and the safety of others, officers evacuated the surrounding area before approaching the shed.
As officers approached the shed, Dimas emerged and started walking towards them, ignoring their repeated commands to stop. Witnesses reported that Dimas had both hands covered with a T-shirt and raised them, pointing at the officers while assuming a shooting stance.
In response to the escalating situation, officers deployed non-lethal beanbag rounds and a Taser simultaneously in an attempt to subdue Dimas. However, despite these efforts, another officer was forced to use their duty weapon, firing at Dimas and ultimately striking him.
Following the incident, it was discovered that Dimas had been holding a cordless drill in one hand and the utility knife in the other. The Mesa Police Department assured the public that a thorough investigation into the shooting would be conducted and promised to provide updates as the case progresses.
