Thane (Maharashtra) [India], December 16 (ANI): In a shocking incident, a 26-year-old woman was severely injured when her boyfriend, who happens to be the son of a senior bureaucrat, allegedly tried to run her over with his car in Maharashtra’s Thane district. The accused has been identified as Ashwajit Gaikwad.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), the incident took place around 4 a.m. on Monday near a hotel on Ghodbunder Road, where the woman had gone to meet Ashwajit Gaikwad. An argument broke out between the victim, Ashwajit Gaikwad, and two other individuals identified as Romil Patil and Sagar. The argument escalated, resulting in the victim sustaining severe injuries. She was immediately admitted to the hospital, where the police recorded her statement. Based on her statement, appropriate action has been taken, and a case has been registered against the three accused under relevant sections, stated the official.

The victim, Priya Singh, shared the harrowing details of the incident, explaining that she had been in a four-and-a-half-year relationship with her boyfriend. She expressed her shock upon discovering that he was married, but he assured her that they were no longer together. Priya further added that he had proposed marriage to her. However, on the night of the incident, she found him with his wife, which led to a heated argument and physical altercation.

Describing her injuries, Priya stated, “Three bones in my right leg are broken, and I have undergone surgery. I have deep injuries from my left shoulder to my hips. I am unable to move my body. When I tried to file an FIR immediately after the incident, no action was taken. It was only after I posted about it on social media that the police started supporting me.”

The incident occurred early on Monday morning near a hotel in Thane. The police have registered a case against the accused, Ashwajit Gaikwad, under IPC sections 279, 338, 323, 504, and 34. The DCP informed that further investigation is being conducted based on the victim’s statement.

Priya Singh’s lawyer, Darshana Pawar, expressed concern over the severity of her injuries and stated that the police should have recorded IPC section 307 (attempt to murder) in the case. The lawyer emphasized that they have been requesting the investigating officers to include this charge but have not received a response. If necessary, they are prepared to approach the High Court for justice, added the lawyer.

Reacting to the incident, Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi expressed her dismay and questioned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for entrusting responsibilities to individuals who hold anti-women views. Chaturvedi criticized the government for failing to ensure women’s safety in Maharashtra.

The police have registered a case against Ashwajit Gaikwad under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including rash driving, causing grievous hurt, voluntarily causing hurt, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace, and acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention. The investigation is ongoing based on the victim’s statement.

Priya’s lawyer, Darshana Pawar, highlighted the severity of her injuries and criticized the police for not including the charge of attempt to murder (IPC section 307) in the case. They have been urging the investigating officers to take this into account and are prepared to approach the High Court if necessary.
