NAIROBI, Kenya – In a highly anticipated ruling, former TV anchor Jackie Maribe and her ex-fiancé Joseph Irungu are set to receive the verdict today in the murder trial of late businesswoman Monica Kimani. The judgment will be delivered by High Court Judge Grace Nzioka in an open courtroom.

Long-Awaited Verdict

The trial, which concluded in July, had its verdict’s delivery postponed due to the judge’s illness when it was initially scheduled for October. Now, after months of waiting, the fate of Maribe and Irungu will finally be determined.

The Case

Joseph Irungu, also known as Jowie, is the primary defendant in the case, facing charges related to the murder of Monica Kimani in 2018. Jacque Maribe, the former TV anchor, is his co-accused. The tragic incident took place at Monica Kimani’s residence in Lamuria Gardens Apartment, located on Kitale Lane off Denis Pritt Road in Kilimani.

Throughout the trial, the prosecution presented a total of 35 witnesses who testified against both defendants. Despite Maribe and Irungu denying any involvement in Monica’s death or knowing her, Assistant DPP Gikui Gichuki argued that the evidence presented in court was sufficient to convict them.

The Prosecution’s Case

Gikui contended that all prosecution witnesses pointed to Monica’s death being unlawful. Furthermore, during an identification parade, the first accused (Jowie) was identified as being present in the deceased’s house. The prosecution also presented evidence suggesting a common intention and joint actions to harm Monica Kimani.

Regarding the second accused person, Jackie Maribe, the prosecution alleged that she was Jowie’s partner at the time and they were living together. Maribe was also accused of being the owner of the vehicle used in the criminal activity. Additionally, the prosecution highlighted that she allowed a firearm to be kept in her house despite having a young child. Furthermore, Maribe provided inconsistent statements to the police regarding the first accused person’s injuries.

Defense’s Argument

On the other hand, Maribe’s lawyer, Katwa Kigen, argued that none of the witnesses had implicated the former news anchor in Monica Kimani’s murder. It remains to be seen how the defense’s argument will be weighed against the prosecution’s case as the judge delivers the verdict.
