Tragic Accident Claims the Life of 17-Year-Old Teenager in Lacey Township

LACEY, NJ — A devastating two-vehicle crash on Lacey Road has resulted in the untimely death of a 17-year-old resident from Lacey Township. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, December 9, and has left the community in shock and mourning, as detailed by the township police on Friday.

The victim, identified by family and friends as Jayson Lee Cugliari, tragically lost his life at the scene of the accident, which took place just west of the Garden State Parkway. Lacey Police Sergeant Darrell Nick issued a news release, providing further information on the incident.

According to the preliminary investigation, Cugliari was driving east on Lacey Road in a white 2012 Chevrolet Cruze. Unexpectedly, the vehicle veered onto the shoulder briefly before swerving back onto the road and crossing into the westbound lane. It was at this point that Cugliari’s car collided with a gray 2022 Ford Bronco, driven by 78-year-old Keith Mackenzie from Forked River. The impact of the collision was severe.

Following the crash, emergency services were summoned immediately, but unfortunately, there was nothing they could do to save Cugliari. His injuries proved fatal, and he succumbed to them at the accident scene. Meanwhile, Mackenzie and his passenger, Diana Mackenzie, aged 67, sustained injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. Both were promptly transported to Community Medical Center for medical attention, according to the news release.

In order to conduct a thorough investigation, authorities closed Lacey Road for approximately six hours. Multiple agencies, including Lacey police, the Forked River Fire Department, Robert Wood Johnson paramedics, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department CSI Unit, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office, responded to the scene to provide their expertise and support.

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing and is being handled by the Lacey Police Department’s Crash Team. Patrolman Jason Lee, the assigned investigating officer, is diligently working to piece together the events leading up to the tragic collision.
