Man Sentenced to Death for Setting Mother Ablaze in Niger State

Minna, Niger state – In a tragic incident, a man named Stephen Jiya has been sentenced to death by hanging for setting his mother on fire, resulting in her death. The Minna high court, presided over by the chief judge of Niger state, Justice Halima Ibrahim Abdulmalik, delivered the ruling.

Jiya, 39, committed the heinous act in December 2021 when he accused his mother, Mrs. Comfort Jiya, a retired director in the Niger state ministry of education, of being responsible for his wife’s disappearance. The incident occurred in Suleja, following a misunderstanding between Jiya and his mother.

Justice Served in Culpable Homicide Case

Stephen Jiya was found guilty of culpable homicide, an offence punishable under Section 221 of the penal code law. The judge, Justice Halima Ibrahim Abdulmalik, stated that the prosecution provided sufficient evidence and witnesses to establish Jiya’s guilt.

During the trial, Justice Abdulmalik emphasized the gravity of the crime and the need for justice to be served. She delivered the following judgment:

“The prosecutor has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt against the defendant, and I hereby find you, Stephen Jiya, guilty of the offence of culpable homicide, which is contrary to Section 221 of the penal code.”

“In the circumstances, the sentence of the court upon you is that you should be hanged by the neck, executed, or injected with lethal injection until you are dead, and may the Lord have mercy on your soul.”

Similar Cases of Patricide and Matricide

This tragic incident is not an isolated case. In recent times, there have been several instances of children killing their parents. In Cross River state, a man named Ekemini Bassey was arrested for allegedly killing his father to claim his N40 million gratuity. The police are also searching for Ekemini’s brother, Odiong Bassey, who is suspected to be an accomplice in the crime.

In Ogun state, a 20-year-old man named Ridwan was apprehended by the So-Safe Corps for allegedly killing his father in a money ritual. The suspect was arrested in Oshoku village, Ijebu North local government area.

Another shocking incident occurred in Ondo state, where an ex-convict and internet fraudster named Fatai Bakare was arrested for killing his father’s tenant, Onyimi Grace. Fatai concealed the body inside a Ghana must-go bag in an uncompleted building at Ore, Odigbo LGA.

These cases highlight the disturbing trend of violence within families and the need for increased awareness and intervention to prevent such tragedies.
