Sgt. Matthew K. Bylski Dies in Tragic Vehicle Rollover at Camp Pendleton

Sgt. Matthew K. Bylski, a Marine assigned to Battalion Landing Team 1/5, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, tragically lost his life in a tactical vehicle rollover accident at Camp Pendleton, California. The incident occurred during a training session on Tuesday evening, with 14 other Marines on board. The U.S. Marine Corps confirmed the news in a press release on Thursday.

The tragic accident occurred during ground movement as part of the training session. The U.S. Marine Corps stated that one Marine remains hospitalized in good condition, while the others have been treated and released.

Col. Sean Dynan, commanding officer of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, expressed his deep sorrow over Sgt. Bylski’s loss. He described Bylski as an outstanding Marine and a leader within his platoon. The entire 15th MEU ‘Vanguard’ family mourns his absence.

Sgt. Matthew K. Bylski joined the Marine Corps in January 2019 and was assigned to Battalion Landing Team 1/5, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, where he served as a vehicle commander. Throughout his service, Bylski received multiple honors, including two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and a Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

Bylski’s father, Ken Bylski, spoke about his son’s passion for the Marine Corps, stating that Sgt. Bylski absolutely loved being a Marine. Ken described his son as someone who did not follow others but instead followed his own path. He was a great kid who grew into a great man.

The tragic loss of Sgt. Matthew K. Bylski has deeply affected the 15th MEU and the Marine Corps community as a whole. The thoughts and condolences of the Marines who served alongside Bylski go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.

In August, the 15th MEU successfully completed its first exercise as a composited Marine Air-Ground Task Force. The training, known as Realistic Urban Training, spanned across seven locations in Arizona, California, and Nevada. The Marines participated in various exercises, including amphibious raids, expeditionary strikes, tactical recoveries of aircraft and personnel, and a military-assisted departure from a simulated U.S. consulate.

Col. Sean Dynan highlighted the importance of this training event, stating that it allowed the full MAGTF (Marine Air-Ground Task Force) to come together as a team and execute various missions. He mentioned that the extreme weather conditions and challenging scenarios provided valuable lessons for future deployments.
