Prince Harry Wins Legal Battle Against British Tabloids
Prince Harry achieved a significant victory in his ongoing legal battle against British tabloids after London’s High Court ruled in his favor, stating that he had been a victim of phone-hacking and other unlawful acts by Mirror Group journalists. The court also found that the editors of the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror, and Sunday People were aware of the wrongdoing.
The ruling resulted in a compensation award of £140,600 (approximately $180,700) to Prince Harry. The judge’s decision validates Harry’s claims that senior press figures were aware of and concealed the illegal activities carried out by journalists. In a statement read by his lawyer, Harry emphasized the importance of truth and accountability and called for action to be taken against those responsible for breaking the law.
Harry’s Mission to Reform the Press
Since stepping down from his royal duties in 2020 and relocating to California with his wife Meghan, Prince Harry has been dedicated to holding the British press accountable for what he describes as “criminals masquerading as journalists.” His aim is to bring about reforms, particularly targeting senior executives and editors.
Among the editors implicated in the ruling was Piers Morgan, the former editor of the Daily Mirror from 1996 to 2004, who has been a vocal critic of Harry and Meghan. In response, Morgan denied any involvement in phone-hacking and expressed his belief that Harry’s true objective is to destroy the monarchy alongside Meghan.
Prince Harry was one of approximately 100 claimants who had sued Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) over allegations of phone-hacking and unlawful information-gathering spanning from 1991 to 2011. The trial focused on 33 articles out of the 140 that Harry claimed were the result of illegal activities over a 15-year period starting in 1996.
Judge Timothy Fancourt concluded that 15 stories were the outcome of unlawful acts, with Prince Harry’s phone being hacked to a limited extent between 2003 and 2009. The judge awarded Harry aggravated damages due to the cover-up orchestrated by senior MGN figures.
‘Compelling Evidence’ of Widespread Wrongdoing
In his scathing judgment, Judge Fancourt determined that MGN had engaged in widespread hacking and unlawful activities, including deception to obtain information, from 1996 to 2011. These activities continued even during a public inquiry into illicit practices within British newspapers.
However, the judge noted that MGN’s board, owned by Reach, had been kept uninformed by former CEO Sly Bailey and the group’s legal director. Bailey and the legal director concealed the unlawful behavior not only from other directors but also from parliament, the public inquiry into press standards, shareholders, and the High Court during a previous trial in 2015.
An MGN spokesperson welcomed the judgment, stating that the company apologizes unreservedly for historical wrongdoing, has taken full responsibility, and provided appropriate compensation. A hearing to address remaining issues and legal costs will be held next month.
The MGN case is only one of four legal actions Prince Harry is pursuing at the High Court. He has also secured the right to take to trial a similar phone-hacking case against Associated Newspapers, the publisher of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday. Allegations of unlawful behavior by News Corp’s News Group Newspapers, publisher of the Sun, will also be presented in court.
In response to his victory, Prince Harry expressed his determination to continue his mission for a free and honest press, despite the risks involved. He acknowledged that fighting against powerful entities might have consequences but emphasized that the pursuit of a truthful media is worthwhile.
