UPDATE, 12/15, noon: The Lafayette Police Department (LPD) has identified the victim in the devastating crash that occurred on I-49 as Melvin Whitsett, a 65-year-old resident of Lafayette. Furthermore, LPD announced the arrest of a suspect involved in the accident.

Authorities have arrested the driver of the vehicle, identified as William Durham, a 47-year-old resident of Baton Rouge. Durham is facing charges of vehicular homicide, as well as operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He has been booked into the Lafayette Parish Jail. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing, according to police sources.

The Lafayette Police Department received a distress call reporting a major traffic crash on I-49 Northeast Frontage Road at approximately 6:48 p.m. on Thursday.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the lifeless body of a male cyclist at the scene. The identity of the victim has been confirmed as Melvin Whitsett, a resident of Lafayette. The incident involved a collision between a vehicle and the cyclist.

An investigation conducted by officials revealed that both the cyclist and the vehicle were traveling in the northbound direction on the 3000 Block of I-49 Northeast Frontage Road when the collision occurred. The impact of the collision proved fatal for the cyclist.

In response to the accident, authorities closed the entirety of I-49 Northeast Frontage Road from High Meadows Boulevard to East Butcher Switch Road. However, the road has since been reopened, and traffic is now flowing normally.
