Kerala Woman Arrested for Physically Assaulting Elderly Mother-in-Law

Kollam, Kerala: In a shocking incident that has sparked widespread outrage, Manju Thomas, a 37-year-old woman from Kerala, has been arrested following the circulation of a video on social media where she is seen violently assaulting her elderly mother-in-law on Friday.

The incident took place in Kollam and has prompted concerned social media users to demand immediate action from the Kerala police.

Responding swiftly to the public outcry, police officials took prompt action and apprehended Manju Thomas within hours of the video gaining traction online. The accused has been charged under Section 24 of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, as well as Section 308 of the Indian Penal Code for an attempt to commit culpable homicide.

A police official revealed that the accused had been subjecting her 80-year-old mother-in-law, Eliyamma Thomas, to ill treatment for a considerable period. The distressing video, which has been widely shared on various social media platforms, captures Manju Thomas verbally abusing and physically assaulting her helpless mother-in-law in the presence of two minor children.

The footage shows Eliyamma Thomas being pushed and punched by her daughter-in-law, causing the elderly woman to fall to the ground in excruciating pain. Despite her attempts to rise, she is met with further verbal abuse. Shockingly, the accused can also be seen making objectionable gestures towards the person recording the incident.

Following the social media outcry demanding immediate intervention, the Kerala police confirmed the arrest of Manju Thomas on December 14. The accused is scheduled to appear before the court to face charges.
