The collision occurred around 10:15 p.m. on northbound Georgia Avenue in Wheaton. Officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police were on patrol when they attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Nissan Maxima near the intersection of Bucknell Drive and Cambridge Park Court.

During the traffic stop, the Nissan collided with a marked police cruiser before fleeing the scene. Approximately 1.5 miles away, the driver of the Nissan reportedly struck a median, lost control, and veered into the southbound lanes. The vehicle then collided with a Toyota Corolla and a Honda Pilot at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Henderson Avenue.

Sadly, the crash resulted in the death of a juvenile passenger who was traveling in the Nissan. The driver, identified as a 19-year-old, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital before being taken into custody. The drivers of the other two vehicles involved, as well as a passenger, were also transported to area hospitals for treatment. Fortunately, they are expected to survive.

In response to the tragic incident, the Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General has announced its intention to investigate both the police chase and the initial traffic stop. The IID will be assisted by the Maryland State Police Crash Team throughout the investigation.
