The incident was reported to the police at approximately 12:30 p.m. on December 12, when a passenger riding in a red 2004 Chevrolet Aveo made a call to 9-1-1. They reported an ongoing road rage incident involving a 2002 GMC Sierra. The driver of the GMC Sierra was driving erratically, swerving in and out of traffic, and allegedly flashed a knife towards the occupants of the Chevrolet Aveo.

The road rage incident was exacerbated by a previous non-injury hit-and-run collision between the two vehicles. This collision likely contributed to the intense emotions and escalating aggression during the incident.

Despite Calgary 9-1-1 dispatchers advising the occupants of the Chevrolet Aveo to disengage from the driver of the GMC Sierra, they continued to follow the vehicle. The situation reached a critical point when the driver of the GMC Sierra pulled over and exited his vehicle in the 6900 block of Temple Drive N.E.

Shortly after, the Chevrolet Aveo drove past the GMC Sierra, and it is believed that the Sierra driver kicked the passenger-side of the Aveo. In response, the Aveo stopped and reversed into the GMC Sierra driver, striking him and pushing him into a nearby tree. Tragically, the GMC Sierra driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger of the Aveo was released without charges, further highlighting the contrasting roles of the two individuals involved in the incident.
