On the afternoon of December 12, at approximately 12:30 p.m., the Calgary Police Service received a distress call from a passenger who was riding in a red 2004 Chevrolet Aveo. The call reported an ongoing road rage incident involving a 2002 GMC Sierra. The Sierra was described as driving erratically, swerving in and out of traffic, and the driver allegedly brandished a knife towards the occupants of the Chevrolet Aveo.

Investigations revealed that the altercation between the two vehicles originated from a non-injury hit-and-run collision that occurred shortly before the emergency call was made to 9-1-1. While the occupants of the Chevrolet Aveo were instructed to disengage from the aggressive driver by the 9-1-1 dispatchers, they continued to follow the GMC Sierra.

As the situation escalated, the driver of the GMC Sierra eventually pulled over and exited his vehicle in the 6900 block of Temple Drive N.E. Shortly after, the Chevrolet Aveo drove past the Sierra, and it is believed that the driver of the Sierra kicked the passenger-side of the Aveo. In response, the Chevrolet Aveo stopped and reversed into the driver of the GMC Sierra, forcefully pushing him into a nearby tree. Tragically, the driver of the Sierra suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Following the incident, both the driver and the passenger of the Chevrolet Aveo were taken into custody. The driver, Steven Allen, a 34-year-old Calgary resident, has been charged with manslaughter and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, February 6, 2024. The passenger was released without charges.
