Sioux Falls Police Identify Victim in Fatal School Bus Accident

Officials with the Sioux Falls Police Department have revealed the identity of the victim involved in Wednesday’s tragic accident that claimed the life of a pedestrian in Sioux Falls. The incident occurred at approximately 7:35 a.m. at the intersection of 12th Street and Garfield Avenue.

According to Department spokesperson Sam Clemens, the victim has been identified as 50-year-old Byron Arturo Cardona, a resident of Sioux Falls. The police have already notified Cardona’s family regarding the tragic incident.

The authorities are currently investigating the accident and have made some progress in their inquiries. Detectives have reached out to businesses in the area, requesting surveillance footage from the time of the crash, in hopes of gathering more evidence and insights into the incident.

However, it is still too early for the police to determine the charges in this case, as clarified by Clemens during a media briefing. Typically, it takes around five to six weeks for the investigation to be completed and for charges to be filed.

The accident occurred when a school bus, traveling along West 12th Street, made a left turn onto Garfield Avenue, heading south. Unfortunately, Cardona was crossing the street at that moment and was struck by the bus. Despite the efforts of emergency personnel who administered CPR, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

At this point, it remains unclear whether Cardona was crossing the street with the traffic light or against it, as stated by Clemens during a city briefing with the media on Wednesday morning. Additionally, it is uncertain how much of the incident was witnessed by the children onboard the school bus.

DeeAnn Konrad, the Community Relations Coordinator for the Sioux Falls School District, mentioned that the Crisis Team of school counselors promptly stepped in to provide support to the students affected by the tragic event, ensuring their emotional well-being is prioritized.

Sioux Falls police are actively investigating the matter by meticulously mapping the entire accident scene. They are utilizing drones to capture high-resolution aerial images and create detailed scaled maps, helping with the analysis and reconstruction of the incident.

Furthermore, the authorities are focusing on gathering eyewitness accounts to gain a comprehensive understanding of the sequence of events that led to the fatal accident. This ongoing investigation aims to uncover all the necessary details surrounding the incident.
