The prisoner, identified as Jayanthi, originally from Bengaluru and residing in Semmenchery, was arrested by the Thoraipakkam police for her alleged involvement in a theft case. She had been in prison for approximately two months before being detained under the Goondas Act, which is an act aimed at preventing dangerous activities by individuals deemed to be “goondas” or habitual offenders. In 2021, Jayanthi was accused of burglary in various areas, including Semmenchery and Arumbakkam.
On Wednesday, Jayanthi, accompanied by two wardens, was assigned to clean the visitors’ room area. However, during the evening head count of inmates, it was discovered that she was missing. As a result, the two wardens responsible for her supervision have been suspended. The suspended wardens have been identified as Kanagalakshmi (Grade I) and Kokila (Grade II).
In response to the escape, the Department of Prisons and Correctional Service has formed two special teams to apprehend the fugitive. Additionally, the police are currently reviewing CCTV footage to aid in their investigation.
