Accident – Death – Obituary News : Thirteen individuals from Venezuela were recently apprehended and charged in Trinidad and Tobago for unlawfully entering the country. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Immigration Investigations Unit made the arrests, with two individuals managing to evade capture. Among the thirteen detained, five were identified as females and ten as males.

The arrests took place between 8:30 am and 2 pm on Monday during extensive operations conducted by the Immigration Investigations Unit in the North and South regions. The detainees appeared before Magistrate Armina Deonarinesingh via virtual proceedings, where they pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them. The five female individuals were each fined $5,000 or faced nine months of simple imprisonment if unable to pay the fines. Similarly, the ten male individuals were also fined $5,000 each or could choose to serve nine months of hard labor. They were given a 30-day period to settle the fines. However, two of the male detainees were remanded into custody for further investigations.

This operation was part of an ongoing initiative by the TTPS Immigration Investigation Unit, which operates under the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). Last year, a man named Codel Douglas was remanded by the police after pleading guilty to drug trafficking and illegally entering Trinidad and Tobago without the permission of an Immigration Officer. He is currently serving his sentence.

In a separate incident, officers from the Four Roads CID and Canine Branch conducted an operation in the Petit Valley district on December 12, 2023, between 4 pm and 8 pm. During the search, they arrested a male suspect and seized a significant quantity of marijuana. The drugs, weighing around 1.1 kilograms, were found hidden in a silver Nissan B-14 motor vehicle. Investigations into this matter are currently ongoing.

These recent developments highlight the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the country’s borders and enforcing immigration laws. The efforts of the Immigration Investigations Unit, in collaboration with other departments, are crucial in deterring illegal entry and ensuring the safety and security of the nation.
