Two Men Arrested After 1-Year-Old Baby Found Unconscious from Drug Overdose in Decatur Home

DECATUR, Ala. (WAFF) – Two individuals have been taken into custody following an incident where a 1-year-old infant was discovered unconscious due to a drug overdose at a residence in Decatur.

According to a spokesperson from the Decatur Police Department, officers received a distress call and promptly responded to a home located in the 400 block of 3rd Avenue SW on Thursday.

Upon their arrival, emergency responders found the 1-year-old child in an unconscious state. The child was swiftly transported to Decatur Morgan Hospital, where medical professionals were able to stabilize their condition. It was determined that the child had suffered from a drug overdose, but fortunately, a full recovery is expected.

The investigation conducted by the Decatur Police led them to identify the child’s father, Matthew Garth, as a suspect in the case.

During the execution of a search warrant at the residence, Decatur Police Investigators encountered another individual identified as Zachary Chase Ratliff. It was during this search that investigators discovered fentanyl pills, lorazepam pills, marijuana, and a significant amount of US currency, suggestive of narcotics trafficking.

Matthew Garth has been charged with several offenses, including chemical endangerment of a child, trafficking in illegal drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana in the second degree. He has been booked into the Morgan County Jail, with his bond set at $310,000.

Zachary Chase Ratliff faces charges of trafficking in illegal drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana in the second degree. He has also been booked into the Morgan County Jail, with his bond set at $11,300.
