“Tragic Wrong-Way Crash Claims Lives of 3-Year-Old Jaya Brooks and 2 Adults on U.S. 95 in Las Vegas”

Accident – death – Obituary News : LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Nevada State Police Highway Patrol has provided further information regarding a tragic wrong-way driver crash that resulted in the deaths of a 3-year-old child and two adults on the U.S. 95 on Saturday.

The incident occurred on December 9th at approximately 3:10 p.m., when NSP responded to a multi-vehicle collision on the U.S. northbound Durango Drive off-ramp.

According to NSP, a Kia Soul and a GMC Acadia were traveling northbound on the U.S. 95 when a Chrysler PT Cruiser, driving in the wrong direction, approached from the southbound lane, resulting in a head-on collision with the GMC Acadia. Subsequently, the PT Cruiser spun and crashed into the Kia Soul. The impact caused the PT Cruiser to overturn, coming to a rest on its side on the left shoulder. Tragically, the undercarriage of the PT Cruiser struck two additional vehicles parked on the shoulder.

The driver of the PT Cruiser, identified as 50-year-old Antonia Marie Apton from Bullhead City, Arizona, was pronounced dead at the scene. Similarly, the driver of the GMC Acadia, identified as 63-year-old Karen Foote from Sparks, also lost her life in the accident. The child passenger in the Kia Soul, identified as 3-year-old Jaya Brooks by her family, was transported to a local hospital where she sadly succumbed to her injuries on December 11th.

This devastating incident marks the NSP – Southern Command’s 69th fatal crash, resulting in a total of 86 fatalities for the year 2023.

The Nevada State Police Highway Patrol is diligently investigating the circumstances surrounding this wrong-way collision to determine the cause and any contributing factors.
