Thanks to the Heroes and Helpers grant, local Target locations were able to gift 40 deserving children from the community with a $125 shopping spree each inside the store. The kids were carefully selected through school systems and various youth organizations, ensuring that those in need were given the opportunity to experience the joy of shopping for themselves and their loved ones.

Crystal Pinchon, the director of public relations at St. George Fire Department, explained, “Our police officers and firefighters went out and scouted kids, talked to families, and they selected the kids based on their need and identification by schools and local youth agencies.”

Among the lucky recipients of the grant were siblings Terall and Bionca Henderson. As they filled their shopping carts with items, they not only thought of themselves but also their family and friends, spreading the spirit of giving.

“It’s always nice to be kind, and when you are kind, it will always come back to you,” expressed nine-year-old Bionca, emphasizing the importance of generosity towards others.

Accompanied by the St. George Fire Department, East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana Firefighter Foundation, and The Safety Place, the children had the opportunity to interact with the local Baton Rouge Zydeco hockey players, who embody the significance of giving back during the holiday season.

Baton Rouge Zydeco hockey team player Adamo Asselin shared, “It’s good that they brought, like, you know, police, firemen, hockey team to show support and let them know that they’re not alone, and that people care about them.”

Teammate Taylor Cutting added, “Walking around with them and seeing the smile light up on their face—it’s a great feeling.”

For Deputy Mohamad of the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, events like these hold immense importance for first responders, especially during this time of year.

“We always ask for support from the community, but now it’s our job to go and support the community,”

Mohamad said, “We want to tell the kids, hey, we are here for you, we love you, and enjoy the spirit of Christmas.”
