Driver Identified in Hit-and-Run Crash that Killed Tree Trimmer on Capital Beltway
SILVER SPRING, MD — The driver involved in a tragic hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a D.C. tree trimmer has been identified by state police. The incident occurred on the shoulder of the Capital Beltway, where the victim was carrying out his work.

The driver, Jadien Ranard Jones, a 39-year-old resident of Henrico, Virginia, was operating a white 2021 Freightliner straight truck on eastbound Interstate 495 in Silver Spring on Wednesday. Authorities stated that Jones struck Eric Lewis, a 57-year-old foreman working for a mobile tree trimming operation.
According to the state police, the collision happened shortly before 10:15 a.m. while the tree-trimming crew was performing their duties on the right shoulder of the interstate, east of Linden Lane.
The police investigation revealed that the crew was in the process of unloading equipment from their work trucks and setting up roadwork signs when the Freightliner veered onto the right shoulder. The truck struck multiple traffic cones and tragically hit Lewis. The Freightliner was hauling a flatbed with a forklift, as per the authorities.
Unfortunately, Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind a devastating loss. The investigation led police to locate the truck at The Home Depot Distribution Center in Sparrows Point on the same day. The driver, later identified as Jones, was also found and taken into custody.

Pending the outcome of the investigation and consultation with the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, charges against Jones are yet to be determined, stated the police.
