Car Crashes into Adel Home, Injuring Multiple Residents

ADEL, Iowa — An Adel family is recovering after a man allegedly crashed into their home late Monday night. The incident occurred around 11:20 p.m. when officers from the Adel Police Department responded to a car vs. house crash in the 300 block of South 10th Street. Upon arrival, they found several individuals who were inside the house at the time of the crash injured.

Nikki Cupp, the homeowner’s daughter, spoke with WHO 13 and shared that her mother, aunt, sister, and sister’s boyfriend were all present in the house during the accident. Cupp’s mother sustained the most severe injuries and has been hospitalized since then. However, she is expected to be released within the next few days. Cupp expressed gratitude that her family survived the incident.

“They were just watching the Wizard of Oz and getting ready to wind down and go to bed, you know… what a nice way to go to bed,” Cupp said.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash fled the scene, but officers were able to locate him later. The driver has been identified as 46-year-old Daniel Grogan. According to court documents, Grogan admitted to consuming Lorazepam, a controlled substance, and using marijuana earlier that day. Additionally, Grogan failed multiple field sobriety tests, according to a criminal complaint.

Grogan now faces several charges, including two counts of knowingly leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury, two counts of serious injury by vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage only, failure to maintain control, operating a vehicle under the influence (first offense), failure to provide proof of financial liability in an accident, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following his arrest, Grogan was booked into the Dallas County Jail on a $20,000 cash/surety bond. He has since been released. A preliminary hearing for Grogan is scheduled for December 22.
