CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – The Mecklenburg County Jail is mourning the loss of a 71-year-old inmate who passed away on Thursday morning, as confirmed by the sheriff’s office (source).

The inmate, identified as Elijah Kelly, tragically lost his life in his housing unit at around 4:30 a.m.

According to the deputies, a detention officer immediately called for medical assistance upon discovering Kelly’s medical emergency. Prompt resuscitation efforts were initiated by the jail personnel until Medic, the medical response team, arrived at the scene.

Medical professionals from Medic took over the resuscitation efforts, providing essential treatment to Kelly. However, despite their best efforts, he was pronounced deceased at 5:14 a.m. Due to privacy concerns, the sheriff’s office has not released any specific details regarding Kelly’s health condition.

Sheriff Garry McFadden expressed his condolences, saying, “Reporting the death of a resident in our care is always a difficult task. Everyone at MCSO has been deeply affected by the passing of Mr. Elijah Kelly, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family and loved ones.”

Investigation Initiated by State Bureau of Investigation

Kelly had been processed into the Mecklenburg County Detention Center on Thursday, October 19, 2023. In light of this tragic incident, the State Bureau of Investigation will conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Kelly’s in-custody death.
