Woman Found Stabbed Inside Dosker Manor Apartment, Calls for Increased Security at Public Housing

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A woman is recovering at UofL Hospital after she was found stabbed inside an apartment at Dosker Manor Tuesday night. This incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of public housing properties, particularly Dosker Manor.

History of Violence

Dosker Manor has witnessed a series of violent incidents recently, which has sparked a demand for improved security measures. Earlier this month, there was a non-fatal shooting at the apartment complex, and back in October, a fatal shooting resulted in the tragic death of 39-year-old Antwawn Shackelford.

Residents of Dosker Manor have expressed their frustration and fear about living in an environment where violence is prevalent. Rosalind Smith, a resident, voiced her concerns, saying, “You can’t rest, you can’t sleep, there’s no security, there’s no freedom, there’s nothing here at Dosker Manor.”

Residents’ Security Concerns

Residents of Dosker Manor have expressed their lack of surprise upon learning about the stabbing incident. They claim that the security measures in place are insufficient and fail to prevent violence. According to them, anyone can enter and exit the complex without hindrance.

Rosalind Smith further questioned the effectiveness of the security measures, stating, “If somebody can just get in here and do anything to somebody like that, I mean, what is up with the security?” Steve Moser, another resident, highlighted the absence of cameras on the floors, making residents vulnerable to potential attacks.

One resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, revealed that Antwawn Shackelford was his next-door neighbor. He described Shackelford as a good man who left behind children and a wife who recently suffered a stroke. The resident shared his own sense of insecurity, saying, “Living here for nine years, I’m surprised I haven’t been shot yet. My mother won’t even come over here and visit me. She comes and drives up but she won’t come in.”

Advocacy for Improved Conditions

District 1 Metro Councilwoman Tammy Hawkins has been a vocal advocate for improving conditions at public housing properties in Louisville. She has actively pushed for the relocation of residents from Dosker Manor whose units failed code inspection. However, many residents still await relocation.

Hawkins plans to meet with the mayor’s administration and LMPD Chief Gwinn Villaroel to discuss the escalating violence at Dosker Manor. She emphasized the vulnerability of disabled seniors in the complex, who often struggle to advocate for themselves. Hawkins expressed hope that Elizabeth Strojan, the incoming Director of the Louisville Metro Housing Authority, will prioritize security improvements at properties such as Dosker Manor.

Mayor Greenberg also acknowledged the need for increased police presence, expressing support for community policing initiatives. He stressed the urgency of preventing crimes like the recent stabbing, stating, “This is one more example of why we need over 250 new police officers across the community.”

Hawkins urged proactive measures to ensure the safety of residents, stating, “Let’s not wait until something happens to your mother or your father or your disabled aunt or uncle before you want to take action on things like this. Let’s be proactive before something else happens up there.”

As concerns for security at Dosker Manor continue to grow, the Louisville community awaits concrete actions to address the ongoing violence and protect the residents of public housing.
