Student with Knife Detained at Santa Rosa Middle School

(Source: KRON) – A distressing incident unfolded at Herbert Slater Middle School in Santa Rosa on Wednesday when a student with a knife was apprehended on campus. The Santa Rosa Police Department reported that Officer Luigi Valencia, a licensed mental health clinician assigned to the school, was attending to a student facing a mental health crisis in the administrative office around 9:30 a.m.

Officer Valencia was awaiting the arrival of the inRESPONSE Mental Health Response Team when school administrators alerted him about an unidentified juvenile on the premises.

According to the police, a physical education teacher noticed an unfamiliar male juvenile on campus and promptly informed school officials about the trespasser. As the teacher was relaying the information, the unknown juvenile started walking away from the area.

Another staff member followed the juvenile as he left the campus and proceeded onto Sonoma Avenue. Eventually, the staff member managed to convince the juvenile to stop.

The school officials promptly notified Officer Valencia of the situation.

Officer Valencia caught up with the staff member and the trespassing juvenile a few houses away from the school. While investigating the student’s presence at Herbert Slater Middle School, Officer Valencia made a startling discovery – a folding knife in the possession of the juvenile.

The 14-year-old student, who attends Comstock Middle School, was subsequently arrested and booked into Sonoma County Juvenile Hall. He is now facing charges for possessing a knife on school grounds.

This incident follows a series of unsettling knife-related occurrences on Santa Rosa school campuses. In March, a tragic incident unfolded at Montgomery High School, where a 16-year-old boy lost his life in a stabbing incident involving a classmate. As a response to the recent surge in violent incidents, the Santa Rosa Police Department recently announced the deployment of additional officers on high school and middle school campuses until the end of the year.
