According to the Oregon State Police (OSP), the circumstances leading to the presence of metal fragments on the freeway are currently unclear. The debris affected both the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-84.

One of the drivers involved in the collision was Bryan Flores Elizondo, a 20-year-old resident of Nyssa. Elizondo’s vehicle encountered the debris around 7:23 a.m. while traveling westbound. The accident took place on a curved section of the road with limited sight distance, causing pieces of the log splitter to be propelled into the eastbound lanes.

Elizondo sustained injuries in the accident and received treatment at St. Luke’s Hospital in Fruitland, Idaho, according to OSP.

The second driver involved in the incident was identified as Randy Jay Oldenkamp, a 62-year-old from Ontario. Fortunately, Oldenkamp escaped the incident unharmed. His vehicle collided with debris in the eastbound lanes shortly after Elizondo’s initial impact.
