Emergency Response and Identification

After the residential manager at Evergreen State College noticed that the students residing in unit 305 were unresponsive, campus police were immediately alerted at around 8:30 p.m. on Monday. Concerned for their well-being, an officer forcefully entered the unit and began performing CPR upon discovering the distressing situation.

All three individuals, including the officer, were promptly rushed to the hospital. Tragically, one of the students, identified as 21-year-old Jonathan Rodriguez, succumbed to the poisoning and was pronounced dead by the Thurston County coroner.

Possible Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Authorities strongly suspect that carbon monoxide poisoning was the cause behind this unfortunate incident. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being thoroughly investigated by the Washington State Patrol in collaboration with Evergreen State College.

Eye-Witness Account

Jacob Benjamin, a fellow student residing next door to the affected unit, witnessed the distressing scene as paramedics carried an unconscious student out of the building. Benjamin believes it was Jonathan Rodriguez, describing the situation as deeply unsettling.

He recounted, “They picked him up, and he was naked and unresponsive. His eyes were wide open. It was a lot. I didn’t know them personally, but I didn’t have to.”

College’s Response and Support

Executive Vice President Dr. Dexter Gordon expressed his profound sadness and assured that the college is providing support to both the staff and students affected by this tragic event. The safety and well-being of the students are of utmost importance to the institution.

Dr. Gordon stated, “It is devastating news for us, and we’re seeking to make sure our students are safe.”

Evergreen State College is fully cooperating with the Washington State Patrol to determine the cause of the incident and to prevent any future occurrences.

Investigation Focus on Carbon Monoxide Alarm

Investigators are currently placing significant emphasis on a carbon monoxide alarm that had gone off earlier in the day. In response to the alarm, a contractor was dispatched to the unit where Jonathan Rodriguez tragically lost his life.

A concerned freshman, Fritz Irwin, raised questions about the functionality of carbon monoxide alarms in the dorms. Irwin stated, “That’s scary because I’m wondering, ‘Well, are the monoxide alarms working in the dorms? What if something like that happens?'”

Commitment to Safety

Addressing concerns, a spokesperson from Evergreen State College assured that every living unit on campus is equipped with smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. The college remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of its students.
