A 35-year-old man from Joplin, Ricky D. Cook, has pleaded guilty to two felony charges in connection with a home-invasion robbery. Cook was facing five felony counts, but as part of a plea deal, three counts were dismissed. The charges he pleaded guilty to include first-degree burglary and stealing.

The plea bargain was accepted by Judge Gayle Crane in Jasper County Circuit Court. Cook was sentenced to seven years on each conviction, with the sentences suspended. He has been placed on supervised probation for a period of five years. As a condition of his probation, Cook will be required to complete 75 hours of community service.

The incident took place on October 10, 2022, when Cook unlawfully entered the residence of Michael Kirby on South Wall Avenue. Armed with a handgun, Cook threatened to shoot Kirby if he did not comply with his demands. He proceeded to steal coins, cash, personal checks, and clothing from the victim.

Following the robbery, the Joplin police attempted to stop a motorcyclist matching the suspect’s description. The motorcyclist, later identified as Ricky D. Cook, attempted to flee but was eventually captured near Black Cat Road when his motorcycle broke down. Cook was found in possession of a coat that had been taken from Kirby’s residence.

It is worth noting that Cook had previously pleaded guilty to vehicle tampering and possession of a controlled substance from an arrest in Carterville on February 4, 2020. He also pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance from an arrest on February 11, 2020, by a Jasper County deputy on West Zora Street.

Judge Crane ordered that the sentences Cook received on Monday run concurrently with the suspended sentences previously granted in his 2020 cases.
