Dahlonega Man Arrested After Cobb County Police Chase Ends in Atlanta

A Dahlonega man is currently in jail following a high-speed police chase that occurred in Cobb County on Tuesday. The pursuit ended in Atlanta, with a patrol car coming to rest on top of the suspect’s vehicle, as confirmed by Cobb County Police on Wednesday.

The incident unfolded around 9:15 p.m. near the intersection of Sandtown Road and Hollyridge Drive in Cobb County. Police officers attempted to conduct a routine traffic stop on a Jeep Gladiator, which was later identified as being driven by 50-year-old Robert Shirling.

However, Shirling refused to comply with the stop and instead chose to evade the officers, leading to a high-speed chase through the streets of Cobb County.

The pursuit continued onto the interstate in the southbound lanes, heading towards Atlanta. Multiple surface streets were traversed during the chase, with both Cobb County officers and members of a local joint task force involved in the pursuit.

As the chase reached the Northside Drive/17th Street intersection, Shirling allegedly rammed into two vehicles before making a left turn onto 17th Street. Continuing south on Howell Mill Road, Shirling crashed into a third vehicle.

To apprehend Shirling, a Cobb DUI Task Force officer executed a PIT maneuver, causing the Jeep to rotate and roll over. The vehicle then came to rest on its roof with a patrol car on top of it, leaving both vehicles stranded on Howell Mill Road.

Following the accident, Shirling sustained minor injuries and was immediately taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. Once released, he was transported to the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.

Cobb County Police have charged Shirling with aggravated assault, fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, driving while license suspended or revoked, failure to maintain lane, and violation of a traffic control device.

A Dahlonega resident is currently in custody following a high-speed police chase that transpired in Cobb County on Tuesday. The pursuit concluded in Atlanta, with a patrol car coming to rest on top of the suspect’s vehicle, according to an official statement by Cobb County Police on Wednesday.

The incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. near the intersection of Sandtown Road and Hollyridge Drive in Cobb County. Law enforcement officers attempted to initiate a routine traffic stop on a Jeep Gladiator, which was later identified as being driven by Robert Shirling, a 50-year-old individual from Dahlonega.

However, Shirling failed to comply with the stop and instead chose to evade the officers, leading to a high-speed pursuit through the streets of Cobb County.
