Wrong-Way Crash Claims One Life and Injures Three in Waterbury

Tragedy struck on Sunday night in Waterbury as a wrong-way crash on Interstate 84 East resulted in one fatality and left three other individuals injured. The incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. when a 32-year-old man from Danbury, driving a Honda Accord, was heading west on I-84 East in the left lane. In a desperate attempt to avoid the collision, a BMW in the vicinity swerved out of the way, but unfortunately, a sideswipe still occurred.

As a consequence of the collision, the Honda Accord was redirected into the right lane of the highway, colliding head-on with a Chevy Tahoe. The wrong-way driver of the Honda Accord sustained life-threatening injuries and was promptly rushed to the hospital for immediate medical attention. Tragically, Francisca Cortez-Arias, a 45-year-old passenger from Danbury who was traveling in the Honda Accord, was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

The occupants of the Chevy Tahoe, including the driver and passenger, were fortunate to have only suffered minor injuries. They were swiftly transported to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Remarkably, the three individuals inside the BMW managed to escape unscathed.
