Golaghat, Assam:
An alleged criminal involved in a series of theft cases met his demise during a confrontation with the police in Golaghat district of Assam, according to a senior police officer’s statement on Monday.
The accused, identified as Dilip Sahani, also known as Lagan Sahani, was apprehended by the Dergaon police on Saturday along with several stolen items.
During the incident, which occurred on Saturday night, Sahani was leading the police team to a location where he had hidden the stolen goods. However, he unexpectedly brandished a pistol from the stolen items and fired at the police in an attempt to escape. As a result, Sahani was fatally shot by the police, as confirmed by Golaghat Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajen Singh, who spoke to news agency ANI.

Aside from seizing one Italian-made 7.65 mm pistol, the police team also found two empty cases of 7.65mm live ammunition in Sahani’s possession.
Sahani had been involved in numerous theft cases over the past few years, causing fear and distress within the local community. Within the past 2-3 months alone, he had been linked to over 10 theft incidents.
“Utilizing intelligence gathered from our sources, we managed to apprehend him with the assistance of the local public,” stated SP Singh.
At approximately 10:45 pm on Saturday, when the police team arrived at the Basic Training Centre, an abandoned facility, Sahani failed to present the stolen items as promised. Instead, he drew out a pistol from the stolen goods and opened fire on the police team, added SP Singh.
In self-defense and to safeguard government property, the police team retaliated. When the gunfire subsided, the area was thoroughly searched, leading to the discovery of Dilip Sahani, who had sustained bullet injuries. He was swiftly transported to Dergaon Community Health Centre, where doctors pronounced him dead. “Our investigation is ongoing as we are determined to recover all the stolen articles,” stated the SP.

Following Sahani’s demise, the investigation into his criminal activities and the recovery of all stolen articles is underway. Golaghat Superintendent of Police, Rajen Singh, emphasized the commitment to bringing closure to the theft cases Sahani was involved in.
