Texas Authorities Arrest Undocumented Immigrant on Capital Murder Charges for High School Cheerleader’s Death
Police in Edna, Texas, announced on Sunday the arrest of an illegal immigrant charged with capital murder in connection with the death of a beloved high school cheerleader. The suspect, Rafael Govea Romero, was apprehended with the help of the community, friends, and family, along with the Texas Rangers.

The arrest took place in Schulenburg, over 50 miles away from where the lifeless body of 16-year-old Lizbeth Medina was found. Medina, a junior at Edna High School, was discovered dead in the bathtub of Cottonwood Apartments by her mother, Jacqueline Medina, on Tuesday evening.
Authorities have not released specific details about the alleged murder, but Romero is now facing capital murder charges. The teenager’s aunt, Ana Medina, expressed the family’s anguish and desire for answers, stating, “Lizbeth was getting ready to go to school — she was still in her pajamas. We have no information right now about anything. We just want answers.”
Described as a cheerleader “loved by many” who aspired to become a nurse, Lizbeth Medina’s tragic death has deeply affected the community. Her smiling face would light up the stands as she cheered for the Edna football team.
Edna Police Chief Rick Boone expressed his gratitude to all those involved in the investigation, including his dedicated officers who worked tirelessly to seek justice for Lizbeth. “As you know, we are a small department, and this can call for a great demand to be put on my officers. They not only stepped up during their own shifts but worked many hours willingly on their days off and past their own shift times. They were dedicated to seeking justice for Lizbeth, and it showed in their many, many hours spent investigating this crime. I am proud to call them my team!”
