Valdosta, Georgia – In a devastating incident over the weekend, a teenager lost his life after being hit by a vehicle. The Valdosta Police Department (VPD) has launched an urgent investigation and is seeking the public’s assistance in locating the driver responsible for this tragic hit-and-run.

According to the VPD, the incident occurred on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at approximately 6:15 pm. The victim, identified as 16-year-old Samuel Johnson Jr., was walking along the 3900 block of Inner Perimeter Road when he noticed a dog that had been struck by an unknown vehicle. Showing his compassionate nature, Johnson immediately rushed to help the injured animal.
Sadly, while trying to rescue the wounded dog, Johnson was unexpectedly struck by a second vehicle that was passing through the area. Shockingly, the driver of the vehicle did not stop, leaving the teenager in a critical condition. Another concerned citizen, who had noticed a deceased dog on the road, discovered Johnson lying in the grassy median alongside another injured dog. She promptly called E911, summoning Valdosta Police Officers, Valdosta Fire Fighters, and Emergency Medical Services to the scene. Tragically, despite their best efforts, Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.
The VPD Traffic Unit, along with detectives and crime scene personnel, swiftly responded to the incident and are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the hit-and-run. Based on evidence collected at the scene, the offending vehicle has been identified as a dark-colored Dodge Charger, manufactured between 2011 and 2014. Authorities believe that the driver’s side front bumper may display noticeable damage. The vehicle was last seen in the vicinity of Inner Perimeter Road and North Forrest Street Extension.
Chief Leslie Manahan expressed her dismay at the callousness and indifference displayed by the driver, stating, “It is unexplainable the callousness and disregard for human life that this offender has shown, by hitting this teenage victim and leaving him. My heart breaks for the family and friends of Mr. Johnson, who deserve answers as to why this happened to their loved one. If you know something, please say something. Our officers and detectives will not stop until they hold this offender accountable.”
