The Enugu State Police Confirms Arrest of Man Who Allegedly killed Mother and Sister

The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a young man in connection with the alleged murder of his mother, Mrs Charity Orji, and his sister, Miss Ukamaka Orji. The suspect, identified as Somadina Orji from Igboariam in Anambra State, is accused of committing the heinous crime on Monday, December 4, 2023, at Umuagu Inyi, in the Oji River Local Government area of Enugu State.

According to reports and a video capturing the incident, the late Charity, a native of Inyi but married in Igboariam, had been residing in her family home with her children for several years. Tragically, her son, who allegedly had been involved in drug dealing, had ongoing conflicts with her over his behavior, leading to the shocking act of violence.

Mr Ben Obi, a community leader in Inyi, shed light on the events leading up to the tragedy. He revealed that the issues began weeks ago when the suspect had a confrontation with his younger brother. The situation escalated to the point where he wanted to harm his brother, but their mother intervened and sought the assistance of their kinsmen to remove him from the house due to his violent tendencies.

Furthermore, it was discovered that the younger sister had been missing for two weeks prior to the confrontation between the suspect and his mother.

Ben further explained that upon the mother’s return from a condolence visit in Akpugoeze, she was met with her untimely demise. Somadina allegedly killed her and buried her in a shallow grave at the backyard of their residence. Suspicion arose when the younger brother returned and could not find their mother, prompting him to raise an alarm.

Upon interrogation by the gathered villagers, Somadina confessed to murdering his mother. Shockingly, he also admitted to killing his younger sister weeks before. The police were immediately notified, and the remains of the mother and sister were exhumed and taken to the mortuary. Somadina was subsequently arrested.

Charity, the deceased mother, was described by Barrister Ben as a hardworking woman who sold fufu to provide for her family. Ben expressed his concern over the prevalent use of hard drugs in the community and attributed the incident to the lack of governing bodies such as the traditional ruler, town union, and president-general to assist in curbing drug abuse.

Urging the government to intervene, Ben emphasized the need to prevent similar incidents in the future. Also condemning the act, the coordinating president-general in Oji River, Mr Ejike Tasie, highlighted the alarming rate of drug abuse in the Inyi Community. He called on the anti-drug agency in Oji River to collaborate with local authorities to tackle the issue in the various communities within the local government.

Confirming the incident, the Enugu State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, stated that the suspect had been apprehended, and an ongoing investigation is underway. Once the investigation is concluded, the suspect will face prosecution in court.
