Man Accused of Texas Shooting Spree Faces New Charges

AUSTIN, Texas — Shane James Jr., the man accused of a shooting spree that left two people dead in San Antonio and four people dead in Austin on December 5, is now facing additional charges.

Previously facing two capital murder charges, James now faces four capital murder charges. He also faces two charges of felony Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant for allegedly injuring officers with the Austin ISD Police Department and the Austin Police Department. In addition, James is facing another first-degree felony charge, although the details of that charge have not been released.

James is scheduled to appear in court on January 18, 2024. Currently, he is being held without bond in the Travis County Jail.

Background on the Case

The shooting spree, which began in the San Antonio area, resulted in the deaths of Phyllis James and Shane James Sr. in their home east of San Antonio. The scene was described as “grisly” by Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar.

In Austin, James allegedly killed Emmanuel Pop Ba, Sabrina Rahman, Katherine Short, and Lauren Short. The violence unfolded in multiple locations throughout the city.

The first encounter with James occurred when he allegedly shot and injured an Austin ISD Police Department officer outside Northeast Early College High School. There was no prior interaction between the officer and James.

Later, officers responded to a call for help at a home in South Austin, where they discovered two individuals with obvious signs of trauma. The victims were identified as Emmanuel Pop Ba and Sabrina Rahman.

James then allegedly shot someone riding their bike on West Slaughter Lane before being pursued by police. He was eventually apprehended after crashing his car near State Highway 45 and FM 1826.

In relation to the shooting spree, James now faces four capital murder charges, two charges of felony Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant, and another first-degree felony charge. The motive behind the attacks has not been disclosed.
