South Carolina Coroner’s Office Seeks Help in Finding Missing Dog from Deadly Crash

A dog that disappeared from the site of a tragic wrong-way collision is still missing, and the South Carolina coroner’s office is reaching out to the public for assistance. The incident occurred on Interstate 85, a major route connecting Atlanta and Charlotte, where three individuals lost their lives. One of the victims was accompanied by two dogs, but emergency responders were unable to locate them amidst the wreckage on Sunday, December 10, as reported by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.

While one of the missing canines, named Asta, has been found, the other dog named Moon remains unaccounted for. As of 2:30 p.m. on December 11, officials are still hopeful that the public will aid in reuniting Moon with surviving family members. Moon, who only responds to commands in French due to one of her owners being from France, has caught the attention of Anakin’s Trails Animal Search, according to WYFF.

The coroner’s office shared this update via an email to McClatchy News, shortly after sending a photograph of the two dogs. Both canines have darker coats with white bellies. In their initial announcement, the office urged anyone who spots the dogs to contact them at 864-467-8945.

The fatal collision occurred on December 10 at approximately 5:15 a.m. when a northbound driver on I-85 collided with another vehicle, resulting in two additional crashes, as detailed in a news release by the coroner’s office. They reported, “There were four vehicles involved in the collision. There were three confirmed fatalities in the collision, with each of the fatalities being in separate vehicles.”

The victims who tragically lost their lives at the scene have been identified as 27-year-old Storm Mikayla Shepard from Duncan, 69-year-old Jimmie McKenley Wallace from Alabama, and 45-year-old Sharae Deneen Green from Georgia.

Green, who sadly passed away just days before her 46th birthday, was traveling with her family and their two dogs before the accident occurred. The coroner’s office confirmed that both Moon and Asta have microchips containing the contact information of their owners.

Autopsies for Green, Shepard, and Wallace were scheduled to take place on December 11. The other individuals involved in the crash sustained non-critical injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital, according to officials.

Anakin’s Trails Animal Search and the S.C. Highway Patrol, who are reportedly leading the investigation into the incident, have not yet responded to McClatchy News’ requests for additional information as of December 11.
