Man Arrested After Shooting Guest at Wedding Reception in Frederick County

FREDERICK COUNTY, Va. — A 22-year-old man is facing charges after allegedly shooting a guest at a wedding reception in Frederick County on Saturday. The suspect, identified as John Morningstar, was a groomsman in the wedding but was asked to leave due to his excessive intoxication.

At approximately 7:08 p.m., the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a man threatening to shoot guests at a wedding reception. The call was updated to shots fired as the situation escalated. The incident took place at the Historic Jordan Springs venue on Jordan Springs Road in eastern Frederick County.

Upon arrival, the first deputy on the scene noticed a vehicle leaving the venue and relayed this information to other units. Meanwhile, law enforcement located a man at the venue who had been shot in the leg. They immediately provided first-aid until EMS units arrived.

Shortly after, the suspect vehicle was spotted driving erratically on Jordan Springs Road. Police initiated a traffic stop at Jordan Springs Market and apprehended the driver without further incident.

Further investigation revealed that the suspect, John Morningstar, had been asked to leave the wedding due to his intoxication. Morningstar allegedly made threats to return and harm everyone present. Witnesses reported seeing Morningstar driving recklessly and engaging in dangerous maneuvers in the parking lot. A physical altercation between Morningstar and another attendee, Kevin Huff, ensued, resulting in Huff being shot in the leg before Morningstar fled the scene.

During the traffic stop, authorities discovered that Morningstar had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the foot. EMS units responded to provide medical treatment for his injury. Additionally, law enforcement found multiple firearms and various types of ammunition, including the suspected weapon used in the shooting, inside Morningstar’s vehicle.

John Morningstar is expected to face charges of DUI, Malicious Wounding, and two counts of Reckless Handling of a Firearm. Both Morningstar and Kevin Huff were transported to Winchester Medical Center for treatment of their non-life-threatening injuries and are currently in stable condition.
