Police have registered a murder case against four individuals, including Harmeet’s 22-year-old brother, Jasmeet Singh, considering it an honor killing. The accused were already in judicial custody for attempting to kill Harmeet, and they will now face charges of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

Family Disapproval and Marriage Conflict

According to the police investigation, the murder attempt on the victim, a resident of Rajpura, was motivated by her brother Jasmeet’s disapproval of her marriage to a man from a different caste. Harmeet, belonging to a Jat Sikh family, had married Gurvinder Singh, a Rajput Sikh, against her family’s wishes.

Gurvinder revealed that he had known Harmeet since their school days, and they had been in a relationship for five years before tying the knot. Despite their efforts to gain her family’s approval, they were met with opposition. Harmeet’s family wanted her to marry someone else, but she refused. As her family became aware of their relationship, they made attempts to harm her. Realizing that her family would never accept their union, the couple decided to elope. They got married in September 2022 and lived at an undisclosed location for almost a year.

Brother’s Involvement and Murder Plot

Jasmeet’s anger towards the couple intensified when Harmeet gave birth to a child on November 3. In collaboration with Buta Singh, a distant relative, and Mandeep, a patient care professional and friend of Buta, Jasmeet hired Jaspreet Kaur, a 20-year-old paramedic, to kill his sister in exchange for a meager sum of ₹3,000.

Jaspreet, who hailed from Safipur Khurd village in Sangrur, was trained in administering injections and worked as a caretaker. The police suspect that Harmeet was injected with a cocktail of sanitizer, mosquito killer spray, and sleeping pills. The injection vial was allegedly obtained from Rajindra Hospital in Patiala and provided to Jaspreet by Buta and Mandeep.

Execution of the Murder

Harmeet was initially admitted to an ICU at PGIMER due to kidney problems after giving birth to her child. On November 13, her condition improved, and she was transferred to the gynaecology ward on the third floor of Nehru Hospital, D Block. However, tragedy struck on November 15 when a mysterious woman, later identified as Jaspreet, entered the ward around 11 pm. Claiming to administer an injection for Harmeet’s treatment, Jaspreet left abruptly without revealing her name when questioned by Harmeet’s sister-in-law. As a result, Harmeet was promptly shifted back to the ICU, and PGIMER launched an inquiry.

Following her husband’s complaint, the police arrested the four accused on November 21.

PGIMER’s Silence and Investigation

Chandigarh Police questioned PGIMER regarding the incident, demanding to know how someone could administer an injection to any patient without authorization. They also requested information on any changes in the patient’s health since the injection. However, PGIMER has yet to release any findings, stating that they will only be shared with the police.

In a statement issued on Sunday, PGIMER disclosed that Harmeet was admitted in critical condition on November 7, referred from an outside hospital. She already had acute kidney injury, absent urine output, and multi-organ dysfunction as complications of delivery. Despite receiving dialysis before being transferred to PGIMER, her condition deteriorated, possibly due to the unknown substance injected into her through the fraudulent attempt.

Despite efforts to resuscitate her, Harmeet’s condition continued to worsen, and she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. Her body has been sent for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, and once the medico-legal formalities are completed, it will be handed over to her next of kin, as confirmed by PGIMER spokesperson Dr. Vipin Kaushal.
