Man Arrested Following Antisemitic Attack in Beverly Hills

Police in Beverly Hills have apprehended a 44-year-old man on Saturday after he allegedly carried out an antisemitic attack, leaving an elderly man bloodied and injured. The suspect, who had no prior connection with the couple, reportedly shouted antisemitic remarks during the assault, which took place while the victim was walking with his wife.

The victim, an elderly man, received immediate medical attention from paramedics at the scene. Fortunately, his injuries did not require further medical treatment, according to authorities.

Beverly Hills Police Chief, Mark Stainbrook, issued a statement on Sunday condemning the hateful act, stating, “Our officers swiftly apprehended the suspect, and he is now in custody. This despicable act of hate against a member of our community will not be tolerated.”

The alleged perpetrator, identified as Jarris Jay Silagi, now faces charges including assault with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery, hate crime, and elder abuse.

The incident gained widespread attention after Pepperdine law professor Alan Tzvika Nissel, who claims to be the victim’s son, shared a graphic photo on the social media platform X. In his post, he narrated the incident, stating, “Here is a #antisemitism vignette you won’t read about in newspapers. Yesterday, on the way to shul, my father (75) and mother (70) were attacked. After being struck from behind on the head by a belt and called out as a Jew, my father regained composure and successfully chased down the perpetrator with the help of nearby @BeverlyHillsPD.”

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also joined in condemning the attack, reposting Nissel’s message and stating, “The individual responsible for this vile act is in custody and must be held fully accountable to the law. The City of Los Angeles will continue to work with our partners throughout the region to actively combat antisemitism.”

Jarris Jay Silagi is currently being held at the Los Angeles County Jail on a bail of $100,000.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of combating hate crimes and fostering a safe and inclusive community. The authorities’ swift response and the strong denouncement from city officials highlight the commitment to protecting the rights and well-being of all residents in Beverly Hills.
