Double-amputee Rex Natoealofa, known for his fierce independence, recently celebrated his birthday in the hospital. The 29-year-old lost his legs to meningitis as a teenager and has faced numerous challenges since then. However, he remains determined and resilient in the face of adversity.

Unfortunately, Natoealofa’s struggles were compounded when his car was stolen and subsequently crashed. The incident occurred last month at the busy intersection of Massey Rd and Bucklands Rd in Māngere, South Auckland. Prior to the crash, the stolen car had been spotted driving dangerously on the motorway. It had clipped another vehicle and smashed into traffic lights before colliding with another car at the intersection.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and the police were able to apprehend the person responsible at the scene. However, the loss of his car has left Natoealofa feeling frustrated and disappointed. He had grown attached to the vehicle, as it held many cherished memories and represented his hard work.

“When my car went missing, I was furious – who wouldn’t be? It was because I had so many good memories in it, and I had worked so hard for it,” Natoealofa expressed. “When I saw the Facebook posts about the car crash that happened just down the road from where I live – at the time, I did not know how to feel. I guess I am still processing things – it isn’t easy living with prosthetics.”

Despite the setback, Natoealofa remains committed to his work and studies. He holds a day job in the public sector and works as a youth worker during the evenings. Additionally, he is pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. Natoealofa views these roles as an opportunity to serve his community and make a positive impact, especially by guiding young people away from trouble.

“For me, it’s a service to the community, where I want to do good and give back. If I can help the youth stay out of trouble, then that’s a win,” Natoealofa explained.

Natoealofa’s journey has been marked by resilience and a strong will to overcome challenges. He had a healthy and content childhood until a trip to Samoa at the age of 15 changed everything. Upon returning to New Zealand, he fell ill and was soon diagnosed with meningococcal disease. The severity of the illness led to the amputation of his legs.

Meningococcal disease is caused by neisseria meningitidis bacteria and can result in infections of the bloodstream and the lining of the brain and spinal cord. Natoealofa considers himself fortunate to have survived the disease but acknowledges the difficulties he has faced as a result.

Despite all he has been through, Natoealofa maintains a positive outlook on life. He has even found it in his heart to forgive the person who stole his car. “I pray and forgive the culprit who stole my car. I’m just glad no one was hurt – we all deserve second chances,” he shared.

Natoealofa’s older sister, Olataga Natoealofa-Matini, has been a source of support throughout his journey. After the loss of their mother, she moved back home to live with their father and provide assistance to her brother. She admires his determination and independence, describing him as a resilient young man who never lets his disability hold him back.

“Our mother would be so proud of him. I know I am,” Natoealofa-Matini said.

Rex Natoealofa’s story serves as a reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the power of forgiveness. Despite facing immense challenges, he continues to forge ahead, inspiring others with his resilience and determination..
