Devastating Road Accident in Chumphon Leaves One Dead, Six Injured

A tragic incident occurred yesterday in Chumphon province when a pickup truck carrying six workers swerved abruptly to avoid colliding with an oncoming motorbike. The sudden maneuver caused the vehicle to flip, resulting in one fatality and six individuals sustaining injuries. The accident took place around 5 pm, and Manoch Plodkankan, an investigative officer from the Lang Suan Police Station, was among the first responders at the scene.

The unfortunate incident happened at the intersection of Ban Khuan-Na Phya Road, just off the Asian Highway 41. The pickup involved in the accident was a half-tonne Toyota model with a Bangkok license plate number TCJ 8112. It veered off the road and landed in a water-filled ditch.

Upon inspection, the front bumper of the vehicle was found detached, the roof above the driver’s seat was crushed, and the windscreen shattered. Additionally, the stainless-steel fence of the truck bed suffered damage. The seven occupants of the pickup, all workers, were thrown in different directions across the road, crying out in pain.

Immediate first aid was provided to all injured victims. However, one woman, initially believed to be around 50 years old but later identified as 54-year-old Sawas Promjinda, was unresponsive. Despite receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), she tragically succumbed to her injuries upon arrival at Lang Suan Hospital. The other six individuals suffered minor injuries, including broken arms, dislocated shoulders, and various bruises.

According to the injured workers, they were returning home after collecting fallen palm fruits from a garden. The driver, identified as 43-year-old Somphon Mitphan, had loaded the truck to nearly full capacity with the fruits.

As darkness approached, Somphon decided it was time to head back home. Unfortunately, it was during this return journey that the accident occurred. Somphon attempted to overtake a car but was forced to swerve violently to avoid colliding with a motorbike approaching from the opposite direction. This sudden evasive action caused the vehicle to lose balance and flip, ejecting all occupants in different directions.

The case is currently under investigation, and further questioning of the injured workers will provide additional details to determine any charges against Somphon. This devastating road accident serves as a stark reminder of the paramount importance of cautious driving to ensure the safety of all road users, as reported by KhaoSod.
